Yamelin

Yamelin has continued to grow into a beautiful young lady and with the help of Francisco, she has made leaps and bounds strides towards her awareness and participation with her environment.  She responds appropriately in social situations, she can search her environment successfully to locate her food and personal belongings.  She has learned how to recognize her name in Braiille, and can independently identify shapes and textures, and daily living materials.  During GOT’s time with her while in Guatemala, Emily and I focused on supporting Francisco with continued strategies to teach Yamelin her activities of daily living such as opening the packaging of her snack and throwing her trash away, as well as positioning in her chair so she did not always have her head on the desk, and standing and walking balance so she could effectively walk with a walker to her classrooms and bathroom.  Francisco was thilled to learn new strategies and techniques to work with Yamelin to continue to expland her world and support her independence.  By the time GOT returned home, Yamelin was walking with a walker, only requiring minimal supervision for directions and locating the bathroom door.  She had previously completely relied on others to get her to and from the bathroom and classroom, and leaned heavily on someones arm to walk.  We also worked with her on brushing her teeth and eating her snack.  Yamelin is moving along and has accomplished so many goals that she and her parents have for her.
